Title: Girl On the village Green Year: 2015 Medium: Bronze
Redhills Vilage Green, County Cavan This sculpture was commissioned by Cavan County Council and Building Peace through the Arts-Re Imaginging Communities Programme in 2015
The theme for this public art commission emerged from a lengthy consulutation period with the local community. The local people wanted an artwork that represented the whole community. I was keen to portray their great sense of community spirit when I was deciding on a concept for this artwork. The village green being a hub for the community to come together, the annual carnival and fair days of the past and children playing on the green became my inspiration for this sculpture.
Different sections of the community were involved through out the process and it has given them a real sense of pride in their community and bought people together through art. The sculpture is of a child runnning playing with bunting at a the annual carnival
and is fun and uplifting. It symbolises a shared space and positive community relationships. Everyone can relate to the child playing on the green as they have done for generations and will do for future generations.
The Building Peace Through The Arts Re-Imaging Communities Programme, funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the European Union’s programme for Peace and Reconciliation (Peace III) managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and International Fund for Ireland enables people throughout Northern Ireland and the border region of the Republic to tackle sectarianism and racism. The programme funded local consultation and engaged communities in the exploration of themes which unite rather than divide, ultimately leading to the creation of public artwork that promotes tolerance and understanding. Through the Arts Re-Imaging Communities programme has changed the landscape of Northern Ireland and the border region, positively transforming the public realm and community relations
